The Catalan Government has appointed Esteve Fernández as the new Secretary for Public Health in the Catalan Health Department. Professor Fernández, an epidemiologist with expertise in tobacco control, has coordinated cancer prevention at the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) during his 25 years of service.
Fernández’s work as a researcher has focused mainly on tobacco control and he has published more than 400 articles. In his extensive professional career, his positions as director of the journal Gaceta Sanitaria in 2004, president of the Spanish Society of Epidemiology in 2015 and president of the Advisory Council on Smoking in Catalonia in 2023 stand out. Until now, he has also been coordinator of the Epidemiology and Public Health Programme of IDIBELL and Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona (UB).
